Day24 09Mar25 - Skyline Drive in Virginia

We awoke Sunday at Seven Sisters Brewery by ourselves.  Despite the drag show, the place was actually very quiet.  At one point I looked out during the drag show and there were fewer cars than when we arrived, so it was a pretty tame evening.

With all the closures on the Blue Ridge Parkway, we decided to skip up to the Skyline Drive vs the Blue Ridge Parkway because, according to the internet, it was open.

By the time we finished breakfast and showered it was after 1000 before we set out for Skyline Drive, it was 39F...brrr.

It was about 250 miles to the Skyline, we arrived around 1345. It cost us $20 to get in! We have a Senior America the Beautiful Pass, but it is at home....Doh! The nice lady at the gate sold us a 1 year senior pass for $20...better than having to pay the $30 entry fee.

Skyline drive is 105 miles, the maximum speed limit is 35 mph, so if you do it all at once it's at least 3 hours of driving, but of course you can't help but stop at every overlook....it's going to be 5 hours plus. It was built in the 1930s and includes a tunnel with a 12'8" clearance, we are only 10'3", so no worries.

We entered from the south, this was the first overlook, McCormick Gap overlook.

It was a nice place to have lunch, warmed up Pizza from our visit with Bob, Maribeth and Rich C.. Pizza is a bit like sex.....but in this case it was good pizza.

We stopped at nearly every overlook, it was a beautiful day and the views were spectacular. I took a lot of pictures but will not bore everyone with them here.

You need to go drive, ride or walk it.

I would like to return with the Motorcycles someday, but when it is just a pinch warmer.

There is also wildlife, we counted 10 deer and one possum on our drive. The deer will stand right next to the road and look a bit annoyed when you take a picture. We saw deer from the small and in ill health to large deer that looked fit and very dark in color. This guy was average.

Since heading south, we saw the first snow and ice since Virginia, well we are back in Virginia.

As you exit the park to the north the views are stunning....Skyline North Exit

We exited the park around 1700 and drove to Front Royal, VA and parked at the Cracker Barrel.

We are debating what we will do on Monday.

  1. The drive was fairly scenic, things still a bit spring gray but will green up soon. We did not hike as the trails did not seem very accessible for a quick walk, maybe another time if we are they’re for the full day.
