Well, almost done visiting family….it was good to see Jen and Justin even though he was not 100% healthy, he did go home that day. Ruth was looking good and in good spirits. :). Home sweet home.

We just love caverns, what can I say, it was amazing. One last visit with family before ending our trip tomorrow.

The drive was fairly scenic, things still a bit spring gray but will green up soon. We did not hike as the trails did not seem very accessible for a quick walk, maybe another time if we are they’re for the full day.

Great trip and you do keep exceptionally good records!! We really did like Key West and hope to go back. Glad everything went well and you are back to Potash Bay in good form. From Sue wow. What an adventure. Happy you are home safely and didn’t lose your air conditioner . See you before too long.

So nice to see Eric and Myra, we didn’t get to see them when they made the trip north last year. They have made a lot of improvements to their home too. The Blue Ridge Parkway was a disappointment but it truly was in sad shape. We relaxed at Seven Sisters and retired early..

Some of the best days of the trip! Bob and Maribeth are so much fun and they let us crash their vacation too, like John and Mary Ann! There is just something about walking on the beach, much longer than Pompano. Plenty to do if you know where to look. Seeing Rich was a bonus.

George and Gail are very welcoming, no matter where they are! It was a relaxing day. I am always surprised that the parking near Val and Mike’s is free and right near the ocean! Dinner was delicious. We hope they make it up north sometime in the future.

Pompano Beach is very nice, no wonder Bruce and Melissa like it here. It was fun catching up with them; we have to travel to Florida to see our Vermont friends. 😃

After the rain stopped, the snorkeling was not bad, until I saw the shark swim below me! Back to the boat for me! Marghueritas and beer for the trip back to shore. Key lime pie after dinner was a must. Thanks to Mary and John for letting us crash their vacation. :)

Day26 11Mar25 - Home and The Data

Tuesday Clayton and Deanna left for work before we got out of their driveway...poor buggers.

We departed around 0830 and went straight to Dunkin Donuts for Coffee and breakfast, their $6 meal is hard to beat...just saying.

We decided to stop in Saratoga and look in on Justin (married my niece Jennifer) who is recovering from a bout with Pancreatitis. Luckily, he is on the mend, and it was good catching up with them.

June, Jennifer and I even walked downtown for lunch at Druthers Brewery, the loaded mac&cheese was awesome; I even took half of it home for later.

Downtown Saratoga is quite nice and it was a bluebird day, sunny and 68F, just perfect for a walk.

After lunch we continued north, other than a strong wind, it was quite nice, and we arrived in Ticonderoga around 1500 to visit my mom at Elderwood.  We showed her pictures of family we visited and she definitely remembered most, especially the Stevensons.  She was in good spirits but I think her hearing aid battery may be dead because she was having trouble hearing us.

When we left mom, I decided I would rinse off the Serenity Falcon at the Ticonderoga car wash...that didn't go so well.  The bay height was not marked, but it looked high enough, I eased in and heard a noise but nothing serious.  The machine would not take bills and I had no change, so we decided to leave, but I could not get out.  Long story short I drove out with the door scraping on the AC unit, I don't think I broke anything, but will have to check it out later. It was a stupid move on my part.  We drove to the Port Henry car wash, it has plenty of height and is a better wash anyway.

We arrived home around 1645, it is always nice to get home. It was ridiculously warm, about 65F and sunny, we unloaded, dumped our tanks, etc. and put the LTV in the barn, where it won't freeze while we wait for spring in Vermont.

Trip Data: I know everyone loves data as much as I do...NOT!

We left on Valentine's day, February 14th and returned on March 11th, we were on the road 26 Days

We drove just short of 5K miles, 4,893 miles to be exact.

We used 295 gallons of fuel, with an average cost of $3.70 per gallon. For a total fuel expense of $1091.

The highest price was $4.20 in PA, the lowest $3.30 in SC.

We averaged 16.6 mpg, which is pretty much what we get on long trips.

The best was 18.2 mpg, the worst was 14.7 mpg.

We spent 25 nights on the road, 14 nights we either driveway surfed or stayed at a friend or relatives, 6 nights at Cracker Barrel, 2 nights at Harvest Hosts and 3 nights at campgrounds. We only plugged in at the campgrounds and even then, it was only because we paid for it. The electrical upgrade I did last year makes running out of batteries a second thought, not a first.

This trip was more visiting than site seeing, we only hit 8 states but we visited many (but not all) of our friends and relatives along the way. We hope they don't mind us dropping in on them, we can be a bit insidious. (Insidious comes from a Latin word for “ambush” (insidiae))

Overall it was a good trip, we genuinely enjoyed visiting our friends and relatives and hope they feel welcome to visit us anytime.

This is our mileage log:

Day25 10Mar25 - Luray Caverns, then North

Monday we decided we would explore the Luray Caverns here in Virginia.  We like caverns, we did our first caverns, the Nikau Caves, in 2009 in New Zealand.  We have since done Howe Caverns of New York in 2016, Mammoth caves of Arkansas in 2020, and Carlsbad Caverns of New Mexico in 2022. They are all amazing and unique.

We arrived at Luray Caverns around 0930, it was packed...NOT. We apparently arrived at the right time of year, very few of us were in the caverns.  As we left I asked a worker how crowded it gets in the summer, she replied "don't come in the summer", I think that says it all.

Luray Caverns were discovered in 1878 and immediately became a tourist attraction, they are the largest caverns in the East.  They are a constant 54F all year, but it felt much warmer due to the high humidity. One thing that I found interesting is that there was no sign of Native American presence, apparently they never found them, it would have been great shelter for them.

The caverns are spectacular, you can only imagine what it was like for the explorers of 1878 crawling through with just candle light.

They also do a great job with presentation, each area has a name, this is called the fish market.

The highlight of the area for us was 'Dream Lake', it is just fascinating.  You think you are looking into a deep crevasse with Stalagmites pointing up at you but it is an illusion created by the reflection of the Stalactites from the ceiling in the water below. The water is no more than 20 inches deep. We stared at it for quite some time, it makes you question your lying eyes.

This is the Titania's Veil, you can see right through the formation and it makes it look like it is made of cloth...mother nature is an artist.

The Cathedral is home to the Great Stalacpipe Organ, built in 1954 by a mathematician. It electronically taps the stalactites to create the tones, it is the largest organ in the world. The Great Stalactite Organ

This is the organ, it can be played manually or by program.

This is one of the electric solenoids that taps the stalactites, it looks like it is from 1954.

Towards the end of the tour there is a wishing well, every year it is emptied and the money given to various charities, of course we contributed, quarters...we went big!

Yes, we were suckers and bought the photo they took  as we started the tour in front of a green screen.

The tour took a bit over an hour, it was worth every minute, if you get the chance, do it.

As you leave the caverns there are other areas to explore, but to my disappointment, the antique car museum was closed.  We did tour the Shenandoah Heritage Village, it takes you back to living in the 1800s, it is a free walking tour of authentic buildings of that era.

I liked this vice, it is very similar to one my Dad had that we now use often at the marina.

We left the Caverns and drove to the Luray visitor center in town and had lunch.  We then debated our path home, we considered stopping in Gettysburg but since the weather at home is forecast to be good on Tuesday we decided to make it a one night stop, not two. We called up my niece Deanna and her hubby Clayton and reserved a spot in their Driveway, just off of I84 in Marlboro, NY.  We found the drive across I84 better than our usual route up I81 to Binghamton.  There were less trucks and it is better road.

We arrived around 8PM at Deanna and Clayton's, we chatted and went to bed, they both had to get up to work the next day....poor buggers.

Tuesday we will finish our trip home......

Day24 09Mar25 - Skyline Drive in Virginia

We awoke Sunday at Seven Sisters Brewery by ourselves.  Despite the drag show, the place was actually very quiet.  At one point I looked out during the drag show and there were fewer cars than when we arrived, so it was a pretty tame evening.

With all the closures on the Blue Ridge Parkway, we decided to skip up to the Skyline Drive vs the Blue Ridge Parkway because, according to the internet, it was open.

By the time we finished breakfast and showered it was after 1000 before we set out for Skyline Drive, it was 39F...brrr.

It was about 250 miles to the Skyline, we arrived around 1345. It cost us $20 to get in! We have a Senior America the Beautiful Pass, but it is at home....Doh! The nice lady at the gate sold us a 1 year senior pass for $20...better than having to pay the $30 entry fee.

Skyline drive is 105 miles, the maximum speed limit is 35 mph, so if you do it all at once it's at least 3 hours of driving, but of course you can't help but stop at every overlook....it's going to be 5 hours plus. It was built in the 1930s and includes a tunnel with a 12'8" clearance, we are only 10'3", so no worries.

We entered from the south, this was the first overlook, McCormick Gap overlook.

It was a nice place to have lunch, warmed up Pizza from our visit with Bob, Maribeth and Rich C.. Pizza is a bit like sex.....but in this case it was good pizza.

We stopped at nearly every overlook, it was a beautiful day and the views were spectacular. I took a lot of pictures but will not bore everyone with them here.

You need to go drive, ride or walk it.

I would like to return with the Motorcycles someday, but when it is just a pinch warmer.

There is also wildlife, we counted 10 deer and one possum on our drive. The deer will stand right next to the road and look a bit annoyed when you take a picture. We saw deer from the small and in ill health to large deer that looked fit and very dark in color. This guy was average.

Since heading south, we saw the first snow and ice since Virginia, well we are back in Virginia.

As you exit the park to the north the views are stunning....Skyline North Exit

We exited the park around 1700 and drove to Front Royal, VA and parked at the Cracker Barrel.

We are debating what we will do on Monday.

Day22/23 07/08Mar25 - HH to NC

Friday we did our morning walk on the beach with Bob, Maribeth, Gigi and Theo before breakfast.

It was chilly, in the low 40s, but there was little wind so it did not feel nearly as brisk as yesterday. The sunrise reflecting off of the bottom of the clouds gave us a beautiful orange ceiling.

There were a few people on the beach, mostly dog walkers. At HH you can let your dog run, this makes it a great beach to walk a dog.  Gigi and Theo love it.

The tide was out, unfortunately, this guy did not make it back out with the tide.

Our walk was about 2 miles (I did not start the tracker until we reached the beach).

It is a great way to start the day.

After our walk, Maribeth cooked us a nice breakfast, June did most of the packing and I worked on my confuser catching the blog up from the previous two days.

We were loaded up and left around 11:00, it was 62F and warming. Unfortunately, we were headed north where the temps will continue to decline.

It was an easy 350 mile drive from HH to June's nephew's place in North Carolina. We arrived around 18:00, it was 53F but sunny.  It quickly became apparent that it was time to transition out of shorts.

We spent some time catching up with Eric and Myra over dinner. Eric and Myra have been doing some significant upgrades to their home, a new standing seam roof and they made their entire second floor into a hobby/craft space. It is very nice.

Saturday Eric and Myra made us a nice breakfast.

After breakfast I flew the drone so Eric would have some pictures of his new roof. It's a lot of roof!

I also spent some time trying to convince Eric to start a new hobby, home automation.  I don't think I was successful. I know if I could get him hooked he is the kind of person that would go way beyond where I am with Home Assistant. If anyone else wants to try free home automation software, here is a link that will get you started.  Home Assistant

I look every day at what is going on at home, I have noticed that the last few days, the wind has been pretty intense.  My home weather station has recorded winds well over 50mph for two days.  I expect to find a yard full of tree limbs when we get home.

We eventually left Myra and Eric around 10:15, it was 65F and sunny.

We set out to intercept the Blue Ridge Parkway just across the Virginia border. From previous trips we were aware parts of it may be seasonally closed this time of year, but we did not expect most of it to be closed. We set our GPS for the Blue Ridge Music Center visitor center since it is close to the VA border.

This is what we found. BlueRidgePway Video

This is what we found at the visitor center entrance. It was not surprising.

It was getting late so we picked a Harvest Host brewery in Wytheville, VA and made our way to Seven Sisters Brewery for the night. We were only about 30 mins away and they had not yet replied to my request for a stay when we arrived. They were friendly and immediately accepted our request. They did warn us that there was going to be a Drag Show at 7:30 PM.

We sampled their brews and I kicked June's butt at Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots. She has that look because she can't figure out how I just "knocked her block off". I had these when I was a kid...don't even try me!

We retired to the Serenity Falcon before the show started.

Despite the show, it was a rather quiet evening, we watched another episode of the Diplomat and started the Martha Stewart movie, but I couldn't stay awake....it was that good.

Sunday we plan to skip up to Skyline drive in the Shenandoah NP since that appears to be open.

Day20/21 05/06Mar25 - Jacksonville Beach to Hilton Head

Wednesday we took our time in the morning.  We had a good breakfast at CB and set off for Hilton Head about 1030.  The forecast was for heavy wind and rain so we planned for it to take a bit more than the 3 hours that google calculated.

We hit heavy wind and rain, but we have been in much worse, it was good washing off the Serenity Falcon.

We arrived in Hilton Head around 1400, it was cloudy but a nice temperature.

We even fit in the driveway of Bob and Maribeth's rental.

We immediately went for a walk on the beach, the sun came out and it was pretty nice.

We walked to a local restaurant for dinner, it was Ash Wednesday so we ate at the restaurant named 'Fish', the shrimp was very good.

Thursday we did a 40/40 beach walk before breakfast, the temps and winds were in the 40s.

We had the beach pretty much to ourselves, imagine that!

We walked for a while into the wind, when we got sufficiently chilled we turned inland, it was still a very nice walk of a bit over a mile.

After breakfast we decided to check out Sea Pines Forest Preserve.

The Sea Pines area has an interesting history, it was one of the first organized communities that sought to integrate development with preservation of the natural surroundings and became a model to many other communities in the country.

The preserve itself is integrated into the community and has many walking, biking and horse trails.

Early in our walk, we saw a gator laying in the sun, with his lunch just in front of him.

The forest has lots of swamps and ponds, we chose not to swim in them :-).

We navigated our way to the location of one of the ancient shell rings that have been discovered  between Florida and the Carolina's.

The rings vary in size from small rings to rings bigger than a football field. The are believed to be town gathering places. Frankly, Bob is probably more correct, he said they resulted from people sitting around a bon fire eating oysters and throwing the shells over their shoulder.

Our walk was around 3 miles and the trees blocked the wind, it was quite comfortable.

At the end of our hike we saw an Anhinga much like the one we saw in Florida.

After our hike we drove to Harbour Town, it was chilly but very picturesque.

We had lunch at the Crazy Crab, what an interesting place, it is very nicely decorated.

We had a nice time in Harbour Town.

We returned to the house and got in the hot tub.  It was a cool day so it felt great.

We ordered pizza for dinner and invited my VT friend Rich over for dinner. Rich is in HH for a few months with his wife Sandi. Unfortunately, Sandi could not come because she was back in VT dealing with a water issue at their home in Vermont.

We had a very nice visit and some great pizza from the Mellow Mushroom. I was a bit wary of the shrooms on the pizza, I did sleep well, but I really don't think it had anything do do with the pizza.. :-).

Friday we will continue to make our way north, we will visit June's nephew in North Carolina.

Day18/19 03/04Mar25 - Pompano Beach to The Villages to Jacksonville Beach, Starting North

Monday we did a few chores with Melissa and Bruce, had a nice breakfast and pointed the Serenity Falcon North.

As we sat on their balcony having breakfast we took in the views, I am sure you never get tired of waking up to the view of the ocean.

That dot is a parasail.

We stopped in Orlando to visit the Thompson's and then continued onto The Villages area to 'driveway surf' at the Pilger's.

When we arrived at the Pilger's, Gail had dinner waiting, it was delicious.  We are so lucky to not only have friends that let us park, but they feed us too. I might have to rename the Serenity Falcon to Mooch Mobile.

Tuesday we hung out with George and Gail, we met up with friends of theirs, Denny and Lynn and drove a short distance to watch some of the more gifted Pickle Ball players who were playing at 'The Ranch'.  The Ranch is an indoor Pickle Ball facility that their friend Bruce built during covid, so they could continue to play with their friends.

It has two pickle ball courts, a large apartment and vehicle storage, it is quite impressive.

The players were men and women in their 60's and 70's and were amazingly good. We were quite entertained at their play.

After Pickle Ball George and I visited another friend, Randy, to see his car and motorcycle collection.

I can't even describe the special vehicles he has collected in his personal museum, I thought I was visiting Jay Leno.

This is 1 of 10 bikes used in the making of Easy Rider, 5 were destroyed in filming, this is #7. Almost every item in his museum has a similar story that makes it special.

He has ridden every bike in his collection. Many were in bad shape when he obtained them but he is a master at restoration.

I even found a Betty Boop!

Randy's car collection is also spectacular.

He drives many of these cars, all are in full working order.  Randy started a few of them just so we could feel the rumble in our stomachs.

I am extremely grateful to Randy for taking the time from his chores to share his collection, it is one of those things that not many people will ever get to see and has to be viewed in person to be appreciated.

Before we left the Pilgers we harvested our coconut, as we hoped, it was still good and fresh. We took half it with us and left half with them....yummy.

We had an uneventful drive to Jacksonville Beach to meet up with Cuz Val and her husband Mike.  We went to nice Italian restaurant for dinner, Carrabbas, it was delicious.

It was great catching up, we left their condo around 2000 and drove to a Cracker Barrel for the night.

Wednesday we plan to make our way to Hilton Head...more north.
